Summer Reading: It Happened In...

Library staff members have spent much of the Spring putting together the recommendations for this Summer’s reading program. We started out with the concept of a Town Read, with everyone reading the same book. Then we toyed with related reading, and before we knew it the whole project had shifted into what we present to our patrons now: a Summer program with a theme, and a lot of rich literature to choose from. We call the program It Happened In...and we are recommending books that tell the story of people during Holocaust in different countries.
Elizabeth Bettina will kick off the program on June 7 when she appears at the Library with survivor Ursula Korn Selig. Ms. Bettina's book It Happened in Italy tells the story of the good people in Campagna, Italy who helped hide Jews in their town.

We hope our patrons will take advantage of all that we are offering this Summer! Plenty to read, movies to watch here or at home, and some wonderful speakers who will engage us in lively discussions.

I’ll start: I couldn't put down Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. It is a story told in alternating chapters: the story of the Vel d'Hiv roundup of Jews, and the story of an American born journalist who is researching for an article about the roundup. Highly recommended reading!
